Presenting not one, but two versions. The first using the original keys (which can be slightly daunting at first), and the other in more viola-friendly keys wherever appropriate. So you have a choice. They are both perfectly playable, but one looks to me to be more like the sort of thing Mussorgsky, who was a canny composer, would have written had he set out from the start to write for violas rather than piano. But they are both great.
Ravel’s superb orchestration uses all the original keys, but he leaves out one of the five ‘Promenades’. Possibly because the fifth is so similar to the first. But our version keeps the work absolutely intact. What an amazing piece for viola foursome! 31 mins. M/A
