Description
Here’s a gem of a piece that has been hiding in the archives.
It is arranged from his Cello Sonata – but there is a problem: It probably helps to know that Hummel was a brilliant pianist, and this work certainly does not disappoint since the piano part is superb as a work in itself. However, the cello part seems limited to either counting rests, playing mostly in its middle range, or doubling the piano’s left hand – not really a workout for the poor cello.
But here’s the thing: it makes for a fantastic viola quartet, one where all the players have lots of interesting melodic interest, plenty of complex dialogue, rich harmonies, and excitement.
It’s a substantial work in 3 movements. 26 mins. M/A
