Mahler – Andante moderato (from the 2nd Symphony) for viola quintet

Mahler’s Second Symphony is up there as an all-time great. A masterpiece for orchestra with chorus. But the slow movement serves as a break, sandwiched as it were, between two other powerful movements. It goes from a pastoral folk-inspired melody to a contrasting agitated mood with soaring melodies, and then back. And it works beautifully for a viola quintet with lots for all the players to get their teeth into. 11 mins. M/A
