Berlioz – Harold in Italy (complete) for Viola Quartet

£29.99

Description

Of all the works in our large collection of Viola Ensemble repertoire, this particular masterpiece stands alone.

It’s a superb symphonic work, but arranging it as a viola quartet led to some re-thinking of the rules. By which I mean, I generally endeavour to create a quartet in the manner that I believe the composer would have written had they set out from the start to write a work for viola ensemble. Much as a regular string quartet might be, but with all the myriad special characters and interactions that a viola quartet offers.

However, although I did include all the above, but in this work it plays out as a concerto – but with four soloists and no orchestra, if that makes any sense. You will, I sincerely hope, see what I mean when you listen to the sound clips.

All in all, a unique virtuoso addition to our library. 44 mins. M/A
