Description
Part 1 and 2 can be played on either violin or viola, although at the risk of stating the obvious, part 1 is slightly harder on viola – but still perfectly playable.
It was not until Brahms was in his 40s that he completed his first symphony, but that is not to say he didn’t write for orchestra prior to that.
The opus 11 Serenade began life as a work for small ensemble, then he arranged it for small orchestra, and finally re-arranged it for large orchestra. But, sadly, died before he could make it into a viola quartet – well, he might have been planning to do so, I reckon. Prove me wrong!
Anyway, no one can deny it’s a fabulous piece of music, and makes for a very exciting viola quartet. 13 mins M/A
