Presenting our tribute to Giacomo Puccini, a great composer who dedicated his life to opera.
His writing is sublime, his technique is faultless, his orchestration is both sparing yet always full, never overpowering the vocal lines, and thrilling the audiences over the years.
This is a Fantasia made from quotes from six of his operas. They are named in the parts, but I won’t spoil your fun by listing them here. Listen to the sound file and see if you can identify them.
A viola quartet has the luscious tone quality that can give the impression of a far larger ensemble, and recreates the timbre of the vocal writing.
It is hard to put a technical category to this, as some of it is easy and some more difficult. So it is entirely possible to pick and mix the sections to suite different abilities. It would also be suitable for a viola orchestra. 20 mins. E/M – M/A
