Ruy Blas is a tragic play by Victor Hugo. Mendelssohn was asked to write an overture for it. So although he didn’t like the play, he agreed and not surprisingly it is a masterpiece.
In fact it also arranges very well for viola quartet. And despite the first part going a little high it does fall very comfortably under the fingers, I find. Altogether a very exhillarating play for everyone. 8 min. M/A
