Description
This is a most remarkable piece of music. Grieg wrote it for a close friend and fellow composer who died tragically young at the start of what would undoubtedly have been a brilliant career. It was so dear to him that he took it with him whenever he travelled. He later arranged it for both brass ensemble and wind band. He expressed a wish that it be played at his own funeral. And so a superb arrangement for full orchestra by Halvorsen was thus performed on that occasion.
It makes for a very intense and powerful viola quartet with lots of interest in all the parts. 7 mins. E/M
