Description
John Jenkins (1592-1678) was an accomplished viol player and composer, working during a turbulent period in English history.
However, as things began to settle down in the arts, he succeeded in bring the viol consort back into fashion, and wrote a substantial volume of repertoire.
So it’s not a massive leap from the viol consort to the sound of a viola quintet.
This is a powerful piece of writing. There is lots of ingenious counterpoint using fragments of melody across the entire ensemble, lovely harmonies with moments of calm and intensity. Superb! E/M
