Schumann – Symphony No.3 (1st movement)

This is the opening movement of the famous Symphony No.3 “The Rhenish”, a wonderfully exuberant work with driving rhythms and soaring melodies, in our unique arrangement for viola quartet.

In its original symphonic form the violas have very little melodic involvement, relegated rather to the chugging accompaniment much of the time, which seems to me a sad waste of their potential. But not in our version where every player has plenty of interest. Really fun to play! 9 mins. M
