I have always loved this work, so elegant and wonderfully descriptive. It has become a standard work to include in those rather Strauss-dominated Viennese programmes. And I have to say, it does have many of the hallmarks of the Strauss dynasty – and why not, when something is that good why go and change it? Besides, he and Strauss Jr. enjoyed a friendly rivalry, catering as they did to the same audiences.
With all the political turmoil in Europe, wasn’t it nice to just dress up in your finest, to enjoy great company and share great music, That’s what the great Viennese tradition is all about. 9 mins. M
