Description
This is taken from the slow movement of his 2nd string quartet. And there’s no denying it is a wonderful piece of music.
But I tend to avoid arranging from the string quartet repertoire. The reason being that the viola can’t access the cello bottom range and we don’t like venturing into the violins squeaky range.
However, in this particular case, if you take the aforesaid away from the original, and according to my guidelines as an arranger/composer, I then have to give something back in return. And that would be the unique viola sound; the blend of 4 similar voices combined with the dialogue written into the music more than makes up for it, in my opinion.
Lots of luscious melodies and harmonies for every player. 8 mins. M
