Description
… or to give it its full title: Fugue à 4 voix sur un sujet de Jules Massenet.
Presenting a most unusual work. Debussy, not being known for much fugal writing, nonetheless created this fugue possibly as an exercise since the copy I was working from was in his own handwriting and was not completed with any expression, dynamics, tempo, or even instrumentation, but was written using the 4 clefs: soprano (obsolete these days), alto, tenor, and bass.
So I have used such knowledge and skills as I possess to create a viola quartet from these basic ingredients. And, modesty aside, I am really pleased with the result.
It is not difficult to play and all the parts are interesting, but the first part does go higher than the others and, being written in the treble clef, could also be played on the violin. 6 mins. M
